edit: unfortunately we don't know if outside pressures are forcing these companies to do this or doing it on their own

Yes, they are their own private company and they can do what they want, technically, but we must all realize that these private platforms are the "commons" of our modern era, and allowing these companies this much control is a really bad thing.

That's the key factor right here. There's a huge difference between a site used by a billion people and a small bakery in Colorado.
