Utter bollocks. Market forces already push data centers to regions with renewable energy without any intervention from regulators. The handful of data centers in places with pricey energy are there for latency needs and are not going to have any plausible effects on Earth's climate. This article and its premise is trash.

Market forces push them to the cheapest, most resource-efficient energy sources. Away from the renewables.

You might want to go read up on this stuff before forming an opinion. There is a reason that data centers tend to be built near hydropower generating stations. For example, the total cost for power near a dam is something like $0.03 per KW/h. The price for the coal plant by my house is $0.17 per KW/h.

Andrae's calculations, published in the International Journal of Green Technology, suggest data centres could more than double their power demands over the next decade. He projects computing will gobble up 11 per cent of global energy by 2030 and cloud-based services will represent a sizeable proportion of that.

Skyrocketing energy demand at a time when greater energy efficiency is needed is a big problem.

My solution is to put these data center near wind farms.

Wind farm power is needed for more important things like replacing fossil fuel generation for electricity that we actually need.
