I hope these end up being practical. I can see them being a little less of an eyesore for offshore turbines, and I really like that they bird friendly.

I struggle to think of any man-made structures more beautiful than wind turbines.

If people that can be convinced that wind turbines are an eyesore, they will be convinced that these are too. So easy to make up some accompanying pseudoscientific crap about negative vibrational energy while the propaganda merchants are at it... The problems with wind turbines will disappear as soon as fossil fuel companies stop paying for them.

I can't agree. There are many examples of architecture I enjoy more. I don't think turbines are ugly, for me it is more that they intrude on the natural landscape which I would rather be viewing. It depends on where they are placed tho. When I drive in farm country and see them, I don't mind, however I don't like them off shore and I don't like them polluting mountain vistas.

Of course one-off architecture is more akin to a work of art, for functional repetitive structures, I can't think of anything nicer than turbines. Sure, I'd rather view pristine natural landscape as well, but certainly prefer to see some elegant turbines scattered about, than a straight-out-of-hell coal power station/coal mine combo (which obviously has a far greater negative impact on living things than turbines do).

I suppose the implication is important too - every turbine I see implies a little less coal being burnt. For those who have accepted corporate propaganda over established climate science, turbines may induce unpleasant cognitive dissonance and other negative feelings.

I showed these bladeless turbines to my partner - they thought they were much uglier than standard turbines with blades.

Their idea is the Vortex, a bladeless wind turbine that looks like a giant rolled joint shooting into the sky.

Doesn't look like a giant rolled joint to me...

Perhaps you're not Wired's target demographic. What do they look like to you?
