Major changes:

  • Aegean Sea is back in
  • The Crusader SCs of England and Malta have been moved to Francia/Northern France/Normandy and Cyprus, respectively. All starting units of the Crusaders are Armies. (This sacrifices the former safety for a fighting chance in the Middle East, and will make the Crusaders possibly a viable half power in the Arabian theatre once I get around to design it.)
  • Africa got a big overhaul, with neutral North Africa split into two (Algeria / Libya?), neutral South Africa split into Ethiopia / Sub-Sahara, and the Cape of Good Hope added as new southern sea province. (This is to give the Mameluks a small break if anyone can get behind their main frontlines, and to slow down movement between the Atlantic and the Red Sea.)
  • Southern France and Piedmont have been merged and re-split into two new provinces, Gascogne and Burgund. (This is to make Spain a safe first year grab for the Mameluks.)
  • Vojvodina (that tiny spec south of Budapest and Croatia in the first draft) has been merged with Bulgaria. It doesn't actially serve a purpose on second thought, and would probably look terrible on the big world map anyway.)

Things of note (and that I am pondering about) in the new map:

  • The Crusaders will need to get out of Outremer at all costs to bring the full power of Outremer and Cyprus to bear. If they can't secure either Antioch or Jerusalem through diplomacy in Spring, they will have to go east in most likely neutral territory first. The northern Crusader units meanwhile have their opening almost pre-programmed: Francia => Burgund => Rome, Prussia => Livonia => Novgorod.
  • Burgund is likely to become a hotbed of Galicia proportions, bordering 4 SCs and potentially dragging Hungary into the Crusader - Mameluk conflict. I've decided to leave it for now as it is as it will likely get very tense, but it might turn out as too interesting and as putting Hungary into too many strong-to-medium relationships after the opening year.
  • Now that England is no more an SC, Gulf of Bothnia looks too tiny and the North Sea looks a bit pointless. I wonder if shifting the borders to Francia - England - north end and Prussia - Scandinavia might be better, making both bodies of water border 2 SCs and generally looking better on a big map.

I'm gonna look at this Skyrock, I just haven't had time lately. Promise. Ping me in a few days if I still haven't commented. Maybe tonight while I eat or something.

Don't be in an unnecessary hurry. Variant design is a marathon, not a hundred metres race. Top priority is to arrive the goal at all after having run properly. Speed only comes after that, and only after you got the more important things down.
