You miss my point. The permanent seats are about averting nuclear war than anything else. To that end, we didn't just give out permanent seats to only the upstanding members of the international community, we gave them to bad actors as well. We gave a seat to the Soviets. We transferred Taiwan's seat to the PRC. We even let the French in.
I don't have much respect for the UN's ability to do anything productive and think the US should sever ties as thoroughly as possible (dig up their 10 acres of New York riverbank and transport the whole thing somewhere else), but treating the permanent seats like party favors only cheapens it further.
