People argue about how much. Had a vet tell me they need less than humans, had another tell me they need much more per pound. My jack russel only needs one, my lab gets two.
Also, they sell this brown goo for dogs that they eat and it mellows them out. Not sure what’s in it but it works very well, a friend gave me some and I’ve been using it every new year/ 4th of july. Sorry, can’t remember the name. It comes in packets..
It is a little late for this, but I did a type of immersion therapy to help my old dog to get over her fear of fireworks.
First, I started out with the small Snaps and gave her constant praise and treats while I let a few off. The next day, I did more Snaps and praise until she stopped freaking out. After that, I moved up to bigger and louder fireworks each day and eventually she had almost no problem with them. This process took about a week.
Wow, that's amazing.
Too late but I'm going to try this.
What about thunderstorms?
After that she wasn't bothered by thunderstorms either.
Thanks! I got the dog from the pound and I am pretty sure she was abused.
Shortly after she moved in with us, she would run away and hide in the corner whenever someone said "goddammit". I used the same technique ( gave her lots of praise and treats as I repeated "goddammit" over and over) to break her if that fear.
You're a good dog mom/dad. I used to date a girl who worked for the Humane society and she had three "unadoptable" dogs she took so they wouldn't be put down. I had to move pretty slow generally because one of the dogs was on edge constantly. She sniffed me once after 3 months and that was "huge progress" according to the gf. Formerly abused animals are hard to deal with, so good on you.
My current one doesn't give a fuck. My old one was very scared of them though, I always had to cover her with a blanket and sit next to her on the couch for a few hours.
I have three. They couldn't care less...as all cats.
Cats can freak out due to fireworks too, so that's not exactly helpful. Also, your syggestion would mean getting rid of his dog, which I'm pretty sure is not an option under consideration.
I used to live 5 miles from Disneyland and they launch fireworks every night 9pm. My cat at the time never adjusted to it and every night was a freak out. I'm honestly not sad I lost that cat in the divorce. I have a ton of construction noise + constant helicopter noise from being near a military base and these two cats sleep through it like nothing.
We used to sedate our last dog. Luckily our current dog doesn't give a flying fuck about fireworks or noisy stuff
